A dead apple tree

A few weeks ago in the high winds part of one of our apple trees blew down. It was already half dead and the living half snapped off leaving only a dead part behind.

I didn't think there were many apples on it, but there was a sizeable pile. They are not that great to eat so were passed on to a friend's horse who liked them.
The wood was cut up and is now sitting in the greenhouse ready for winter fires. When we had a rabbit, Hoppy, she used to enjoy nibbling up pieces of apple wood.

The only problem now is deciding what to do with the remaining half of the tree. It appears completely dead, but has a rose, Rosa rambling rector growing through it so I think for the moment we will leave it as it is. Of course, if we had planted a different tree when we moved in 10 years ago it would have been well established now, but then that's the beauty of hindsight.
