Ground Elder

This perennial weed, Aegopodium podograria is very hard to get rid of. This patch is on the bank at the top of the garden and however much we cut it back it still keeps on growing. The roots are very hard to dig out and any left in the ground has potential to make a new plant. It belongs to the carrot family. Currently, it is just about being contained and I think that is probably as much as we can hope for. It was introduced by the Romans for its herbal properties - it was believed to cure gout. It can be eaten and apparently has an aromatic lemony taste.
