Today I was very excited to find we had a wild orchid at the top of the garden. There is a small  area under the apple trees where the grass has been left long and we noticed a small pink flower growing in amongst it. Careful inspection found it to have green non spotty leaves and I was fairly sure it was a pyramidal orchid - based on the fact that I did a wild flower project in about 1971 and pressed a pyramidal orchid, as of course then it was acceptable to press wild flowers. The wildflower books were duly checked and my thoughts were confirmed.
It is the commonest orchid  and grows on chalk grasslands. Our garden has about two inches of topsoil and then it is solid chalk so that all fits as well. It normally flowers from June to August. Fantastic!
